1. Reading Raised Right: How I Untangled My Faith form Politics and Learned to Start Living the Gospel with author Alisa Harris in my community, the Home for the Wayward, was a highlight for me. It is always good to connect with other people on the path to spiritual self-leadership, especially those who have had the guts to write about their experiences.

This week, I finished reading Sue Monk Kidd's The Dance of the Dissident Daughter: A Woman's Journey from Christian Tradition to the Sacred Feminine. It was originally published when I was just beginning adulthood. I wish I had read it then, although I doubt I would have benefited from it as much I did now. It is encouraging to read about someone else's path to spiritual awakening. However, as with other books on spiritual awakening from its time, it outlines so clearly what is making our culture sick but peddles the solution of individual enlightenment. I certainly can't become enlightened on someone else's behalf, but humanity cannot do better than the worst of us. We are seeing that play out in the stark reality of the last few years. It is not only women whose spirits have been asleep, it is all but a few of us.

When on god's great earth did anyone with authority get worked up because the down-and-out, the rough rabble cleaned up their acts?
